We explored the effects of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on knee pain through a well-structured randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
Involving 88 healthy participants, the study compared the outcomes of those taking MSM against a placebo over a 12-week period.
Results showed that MSM significantly improved knee health and overall well-being according to the Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure, with a notable difference in scores between the two groups.
This suggests that MSM could be a helpful option for those dealing with mild knee pain.

MSM ineffective for knee pain
A randomized controlled trial evaluating methylsulfonylmethane versus placebo to prevent knee pain in military initial entry trainees.
We examined the impact of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on knee pain in military trainees. In a randomized controlled trial, 180 participants, aged 18 to 40, either received 3 grams of MSM or a placebo for 8 weeks.
Unfortunately, our findings showed no significant improvements in knee pain levels or mood scores among those taking MSM compared to the placebo group. Although MSM can be safely consumed, it seems it may not effectively prevent knee pain in active individuals.

Knee never bothered
144 people found this helpful
For many years, my meniscus would cause knee pain. I began to take this drug regularly, and now for about a year and a half, my knee has never bothered me.
Knee pain is a common condition that can result from various causes, including injuries, overuse, and underlying medical conditions such as arthritis. The knee joint is a complex structure composed of bones, ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, all of which work together to enable movement and support body weight. When any of these components are damaged or inflamed, it can lead to discomfort, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility in the affected area.
In many cases, knee pain can manifest as acute pain following an injury, such as a tear in a ligament or cartilage damage. Alternatively, it may develop gradually due to factors like repetitive strain, age-related degeneration, or conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Treatment options vary widely and may include rest, physical therapy, medication, or, in severe cases, surgical interventions. If you're experiencing persistent knee pain, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.
Glucosamine Chondroitin formulas are dietary supplements commonly used to support joint health and alleviate symptoms associated with osteoarthritis. These formulas typically contain glucosamine, a naturally occurring compound in the body that contributes to the formation and repair of cartilage, and chondroitin sulfate, which helps cartilage retain water and maintain its elasticity. Together, these ingredients are believed to promote joint function, reduce pain, and improve overall mobility, particularly in individuals who experience wear and tear on their joints due to age, physical activity, or injury.
The efficacy of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can vary from person to person, and while some users report significant relief from joint discomfort, scientific studies on their effectiveness have produced mixed results. It's essential to consult with a healthcare provider before adding these supplements to your routine, especially if you have existing health conditions or are taking other medications. Many brands also blend these ingredients with additional vitamins, minerals, or herbal extracts to enhance their joint-supporting benefits, making it crucial to read labels and choose formulas that fit your specific needs.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are popular supplements often marketed for joint health, especially for conditions like osteoarthritis and knee pain. While some studies suggest that these compounds may offer relief by reducing inflammation and promoting cartilage health, the evidence is mixed. A 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that glucosamine did not significantly relieve pain compared to a placebo. However, some users report subjective improvements in their symptoms and joint function after using these supplements over a longer period.
It’s important to note that the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin can vary by individual. Factors such as the severity of joint pain, overall diet, and lifestyle choices also play crucial roles in joint health. If you’re considering these supplements for knee pain, it’s always a good idea to discuss it with a healthcare professional who can help guide you on proper dosage and potential interactions with other medications.
Based on user reviews, the time it typically takes to see results from this supplement for knee pain seems to vary, with some users reporting improvements as soon as five days into their regimen Read Review, while others have noted significant benefits after several weeks to months of continuous intake. For example, one user indicated they experienced relief after two months of usage Read Review, and another mentioned feeling better within just a couple of weeks Read Review.
Moreover, several reviewers emphasized the importance of regular use, with some recommending a course length of three months Read Review. A consistent regimen appears crucial for sustaining results, with anecdotes suggesting that lingering knee discomfort returns if the supplement is not taken regularly Read Review. Overall, while some see quick relief, others advocate for a more prolonged commitment for optimal effectiveness.
When it comes to knee pain, the effectiveness of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) appears mixed. On one hand, a study involving 88 participants found that MSM significantly improved knee health and overall well-being after 12 weeks, as measured by the Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure. This suggests that MSM may be beneficial for those experiencing mild knee pain [1]. However, contrasting findings emerge from another study of military trainees, which reported no significant improvements in knee pain levels after 8 weeks of MSM supplementation compared to a placebo [2].
Additionally, while there have been some positive reports regarding MSM's effect on knee osteoarthritis, the observed improvements have been described as minimal and may lack clinical relevance [4]. On the other hand, a different supplement, Instaflex™, displayed significant efficacy in reducing knee pain severity among older adults experiencing chronic discomfort, making it a potentially more effective option for managing knee pain [3]. Ultimately, while there is some support for MSM's role in alleviating knee pain, especially in mild cases, more research is necessary to draw definitive conclusions about its overall effectiveness and safety.
Based on user reviews, many individuals have reported significant improvements in their knee and joint discomfort after using this supplement. A substantial number of users highlight their experiences, indicating that knee pain often diminished after as little as five days of regular intake Read Review, with others sharing that after consistent use, their pain ceased entirely Read Review. Users have noted that their ability to perform daily activities improved immensely, from enjoying jogging without pain Read Review to alleviating years of discomfort Read Review.
Additionally, some reviews mention positive changes beyond just joint pain relief, such as improved mobility and reduced cracking sounds in joints Read Review. Anecdotal evidence suggests that consistent usage over a few months may be crucial for long-term benefits, with recommendations pointing towards a course of three to four months for optimal results Read Review. While many users have experienced substantial relief, individual results can vary, and some may need to adjust their intake for personalized effectiveness.
Based on user reviews, many individuals have successfully combined this supplement with other products, particularly collagen, to enhance its effectiveness in managing knee pain. Users have reported that the synergistic effects of glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM, when taken alongside collagen, not only improve joint mobility but also provide noticeable benefits for skin health. One user noted, "I take it with collagen for additional benefits, noticing improvements in both my knees and skin" Read Review. This trend suggests that combining supplements may lead to a broader range of health benefits, particularly for those dealing with joint issues.
Additionally, other users mentioned the importance of maintaining a consistent regimen and sometimes layering different supplements to achieve optimal results. One review highlighted the effectiveness of taking glucosamine and chondroitin for joint issues, suggesting that it works even better when used in conjunction with MSM capsules for comprehensive joint care Read Review. Overall, user feedback underscores the potential advantages of combining this supplement with others in the pursuit of alleviating knee pain and improving joint health.
Users report a consensus that consistent and regular intake of Glucosamine Chondroitin formulas is essential for alleviating knee pain. Many reviews suggest a course duration of at least three months for optimal results, with users frequently mentioning improvements starting around the fifth day of use (Read Review). Several users emphasize that committing to a regimen for at least three to four months can lead to significant relief from discomfort (Read Review), while others reported similar success after two months of use (Read Review).
The dosage appears to vary, with some users noting they take four capsules a day during flare-ups for maximum effectiveness (Read Review). Regular intake seems key, as users report that interruptions in dosage lead to a resurgence of knee pain (Read Review). Reviewers also highlight the importance of individualizing the dose according to personal needs and experiences, suggesting that users may need to experiment to find their optimal regimen.
